Navigation Label Length
Navigation Label Length & Simplification
Effective Date: March 17, 2026 Last Updated: March 17, 2026
Hibu Policy
Navigation labels must be concise, scannable, and structured to maintain a single-line header layout across desktop breakpoints. Writers may shorten navigation labels and are not required to match full page or category names.
Navigation Wrapping (Critical Consideration)
This guideline exists to prevent navigation wrapping, which occurs when labels are too long and force the header navigation onto a second line.
Navigation must remain on a single line at standard desktop widths. The primary checkpoint for this is
1366px desktop view in preview mode.
If navigation wraps:
- Labels must be shortened
- Simplification is required (not optional)
Writers are expected to adjust navigation labels when wrapping occurs and must document any changes using an assumption so QA can validate the decision.
For full rules governing navigation structure, behavior, and styling, refer to the
Header Navigation definition.
Definition
Navigation labels are the visible text links in the header navigation that direct users to primary pages or category landing pages.
These labels are designed for quick scanning and orientation — not for full keyword expression.
Purpose / Why It Matters
Navigation is one of the most frequently used elements on the site. Overly long labels:
- Reduce scan speed
- Cause wrapping that breaks layout consistency
- Create visual clutter
- Diminish perceived site quality
Concise labels improve usability while maintaining full SEO value through page-level content.
Rules & Guidelines
Label Length & Structure
- Navigation labels must be short and scannable
- Labels must avoid unnecessary qualifiers or repeated terms
- Labels must not cause the navigation to wrap to multiple lines on desktop
Wrapping Validation Requirement
- Navigation must be reviewed at 1366px desktop width in preview mode
- If labels cause wrapping, they must be shortened
- Labels must not be resized, compressed, or forced to fit
- Simplification rules must be applied when resolving wrapping issues
- Any label changes made to resolve wrapping must be documented with an assumption for QA review
Simplification Rules
- Writers may shorten labels when context makes meaning clear
- Industry or site context can replace repeated keyword
- Examples:
- “Commercial Fencing & Gates” → “Commercial”
- “Residential Fencing & Gates” → “Residential”
- “Decorative Accent Panels & Fencing” → “Decorative”
SEO Considerations
- Navigation labels are not a primary SEO driver
- Full keyword targeting must be handled on:
- Page titles
- Headings (H1, H2)
- On-page content
- Repeating keywords in navigation provides minimal SEO benefit

Do:
- Keep labels concise and intuitive

- Prioritize readability over keyword inclusion

- Force full page titles into navigation
- Repeat obvious keywords (e.g., “Fencing” on a fencing site)
- Allow navigation to wrap or compress unnaturally
