Breadcrumbs
Breadcrumbs
Effective Date: February 1, 2026
Last Updated: February 1, 2026
Overview
Breadcrumbs provide a simple navigational trail that shows where a page sits within the site’s hierarchy. While originally designed for very large websites (100–1,000+ pages), Hibu One Smart Sites use breadcrumbs primarily for
internal linking strength,
on-page SEO, and
structured data (schema) benefits.
All Hibu One templates include a Breadcrumbs widget by default.
Design, Build, and Copy teams do not need to add or configure breadcrumbs under normal circumstances — only confirm that the widget displays properly when creating or editing pages.
Definition
The Breadcrumbs widget automatically displays the page’s hierarchical position within the site. Breadcrumb Schema is applied by the Duda widget, providing clear page-relationship signals to search engines and AI systems.
Breadcrumbs support:
- Stronger internal linking
- Clearer content relationships
- Improved navigation (when applicable)
- Additional structured data benefits
Purpose / Why It Matters
Even though Hibu One sites typically contain fewer pages than enterprise websites, breadcrumbs still offer measurable SEO value:
- Strengthens internal linking between key pages
- Improves crawlability and page context for search engines
- Enables breadcrumb schema, which benefits modern AI search experiences
- Provides a consistent, predictable UI pattern across all standard pages
Breadcrumbs are included for SEO first — not because our sites require complex navigation.
Rules & Guidelines
Where Breadcrumbs Are Required
Breadcrumbs must appear on all standard site pages, including:
- Core service pages
- About / Contact pages
- Sub-pages and nested pages
- Inventory pages
- Blog posts (when applicable)
Breadcrumbs are placed automatically at the top of the page layout in the Hibu One template.
Note: Breadcrumbs appear on Mobile at the bottom of the page. This is true for all pages, the breadcrumb widget does not need to be deleted on mobile.
Where Breadcrumbs Must Not Appear
Breadcrumbs must not appear on the following:
- Homepage
- Service Area Pages (SAPs)
- Geo Pages (GEOs)
These exclusions are by design.
Breadcrumbs on SAPs/GEOs create false hierarchy signals, duplicate navigation paths, and incorrect schema relationships. The absence of breadcrumbs on these pages is
expected, correct, and required.
Editor Behavior & Template Notes
In Duda’s content editor:
- Breadcrumbs automatically show the current page
- Content teams should not adjust advanced settings unless directed by Product or QA
The widget provides three options, but
Hibu teams should leave defaults in place:
- Show Home Page
- Show Current Page
- Hide on pages without a parent
Defaults already meet Hibu One requirements.
